Sticks

Click above to watch how drum set sticks are used.

Drum set sticks come in a wide variety of makes and models. A common size is 16 inches long with a .55 inch diameter. There is a spectrum of acceptable stick technique, but most importantly, use an economy of motion when striking the drum. Maintain a straight and vertical stick travel as much as possible. Use a grip that either boxes the stick entirely, creating a 2 point fulcrum between the thumb and pointer, or with a 3 point fulcrum between the thumb, pointer, and middle finger. A two-point fulcrum is common in general playing or more aggressive playing like marching percussion or some drum set playing. For a three-point fulcrum, use the end of the middle finger to press upward on the stick, creating downward pressure on the tip of the stick. This will be an effective technique for more delicate playing or buzz rolls.
