Guiro

The guiro is traditionally a gourd with grooves etched into the surface. It is held with the open end facing upward and is scraped with a stick in an "up and down" motion creating a "long-short-short" rhythmic pattern. The sound is distinct and strengthens the texture of the rhythm section in most Afro-Cuban ensembles.
