Triangle

This instrument is named for its shape, and has existed in its present form since the 1800s, but has emerged from many earlier instruments, such as the sistrum from Sumeria in the middle of the third century B.C. A sistrum looks like a stirrup from a saddle and usually contains metal bars with metal discs suspended that rattle when shaken. The triangle was used for religious purposes in mediaeval churches and occurs more frequently in paintings with the exception of cymbals. Triangles can be manufactured from a variety of alloys and are usually struck with a metal beater. Striking on the face of the triangle produces a darker sound than when struck on the outer side. Suspending the triangle on some type of clip or hanging device allows the instrument to ring more freely. Metal strikers come in different sizes to enhance dynamics and sound qualities.
